Aliya! Aliya! Elephant Tours – 9 Day Tour

Elephants are one of the few mega-herbivores remaining in the world. Both African and Asian Elephants are considered to be endangered according to the IUCN red date book. The Asian Elephant is under greater threat due to smaller population and restricted distribution. These majestic creatures once enjoyed wide distribution throughout Asia from Euphrates and Tigris River valleys in Iraq. From west through Himalayan regions to dense tropical rainforests of Indochina from East now confined to only 13 Asian Countries and Sri Lanka is blessed to be among those countries. Furthermore Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is a sub species endemic to Sri Lanka. Not only that, it is also a country where you have very high probability of seeing wild elephants in their natural habitats and the “Gathering” which occurs in July to September in Minneriya also known as one of the world’s largest Asian elephant gatherings.

The tour “Aliya” (Aliya – the sinhala name for elephant) is focused on that majestic animal. You will not only seeing them in the wild but also see the other aspects such as of human-coexistence, human-elephant conflict and cultural bond of Sri Lankan elephant.

Day 1

Airport – Sigiriya
Meet on arrival and transfer to Sigiriya. Rest of the day is at leisure. Option : Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress (cost not included) Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 2

Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Minneriya – Sigiriya

After breakfast transfer to Polonnaruwa. Visit ancient city of Polonnaruwa. During this visit you will see the cultural association of elephant in Sri Lanka. Several rock carvings of elephant and Elephant wall are some of the evidence. In the evening transfer to Minneriya. Visit Minneriya National Park to see the wild elephants. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 3

Sigiriya – Kalawewa – Sigiriya 

After breakfast do a elephant back safari. Thereafter visit some of the human elephant conflict areas to see the strategies used by humans to keep the elephants away from their homes and farmlands. In the evening visit Kalawewa area to see wild elephants. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 4

Sigiriya – Kandy

After breakfast transfer to Kandy which was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and a world heritage city. In the evening visit the temple of the tooth relic. This temple has very strong cultural bond with elephants. Over the centuries elephants were used as the prime attraction of “Dalada Perahera” which is one of the most important buddhist festivals of the country. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 5

Kandy – Pinnawala – Kandy

After breakfast transfer to Pinnawala. Visit Pinnawala Elephant orphanage, first of its kind in the world. This is a unique place where abandoned and disabled elephants get lot of care and protection. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 6

Kandy – Udawalawa 

After breakfast transfer to Udawalawa. At the park entrance get in to safari vehicles and transfer to your mobile campsite inside the park. In the evening do a safari in Udawalawa National park. This park is world famous for the abundance of its elephants. Dinner and overnight stay at tented camps.

Day 7

Udawalawa 

After breakfast morning safari in Udawalawa National park.. In the evening do another safari in Udawalawa National park. Dinner and overnight stay at tented camps.

Day 8

Udawalawa – Wattala

After breakfast transfer to Wattala. Rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 9

Wattala – Airport

After breakfast transfer to Airport.
