Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka

Nuwara Eliya is a scenic hill town located in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, at an elevation of about 1,868 meters above sea level. In ancient times, the area was covered with forests and grasslands and was sparsely inhabited. Nuwara Eliya gained prominence during the British colonial period in the 19th century, when British planters discovered that the cool climate and fertile soil were ideal for tea cultivation.
The British developed Nuwara Eliya as a hill-station retreat, building Tudor-style bungalows, golf courses, racecourses, and landscaped gardens. Because of its cool weather and colonial architecture, the town came to be known as “Little England.” Many of these colonial-era buildings, including hotels and public spaces, remain in use today, preserving the town’s historical charm.
