Negombo Sri Lanka
Negombo is a coastal town located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, about 30 km north of Colombo and close to Bandaranaike International Airport. From ancient times, Negombo was an important trading port, especially known for its cinnamon trade, which attracted Arab, Chinese, and South Indian traders long before European arrival.
During the Portuguese period in the 16th century, Negombo was fortified and became one of the earliest colonial settlements. The Portuguese introduced Roman Catholicism, leaving a strong Christian influence that continues today, earning Negombo the nickname “Little Rome.” In the 17th century, the Dutch captured Negombo, expanded the fort, and built the Dutch Canal to transport spices. Later, the British developed Negombo as a fishing and commercial town. Today, Negombo reflects a blend of colonial heritage, fishing traditions, and modern tourism.
