Kalpitiya Sri Lanka

Kalpitiya is a coastal town and peninsula located in the Puttalam District of Sri Lanka’s North-Western Province. Due to its strategic position along important sea routes, Kalpitiya was historically significant as a trading and maritime center. Arab traders and later European powers used the area for commerce and navigation along Sri Lanka’s west coast.
During the colonial period, Kalpitiya came under Portuguese rule in the early 16th century. It was later captured by the Dutch in 1659, who built the Kalpitiya Dutch Fort between 1667 and 1676 to control trade with the Kingdom of Kandy. The British later took over the region in the late 18th century. Today, the remaining fort and churches stand as reminders of Kalpitiya’s colonial past.
