Katunayake Sri Lanka
Katunayake is a town located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, near Negombo, and is best known as the home of Bandaranaike International Airport, the country’s main international gateway. Historically, Katunayake was a coastal and rural settlement influenced by fishing, agriculture, and lagoon-based livelihoods. Its strategic location near the western coastline later increased its importance during the colonial period.
Under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, the surrounding Negombo–Katunayake region developed as a trading and military zone. In the modern era, Katunayake gained national significance with the establishment of the international airport in the 1960s, transforming it into Sri Lanka’s primary entry and exit point for global travel. Today, Katunayake plays a vital role in aviation, trade, and tourism, supported by the Katunayake Export Processing Zone and airport-based hospitality services.
