Bentota Sri Lanka

Bentota is a coastal town located on Sri Lanka’s south-western coast, in the Southern Province. Historically, the area was known as Bhimatirtha, a name referenced in ancient Sri Lankan chronicles and literary works. Bentota gained strategic importance during the colonial period, particularly under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. In the 17th century, the Portuguese constructed a small fort at the mouth of the Bentota River, marking the southern boundary of their territory. Later, the Dutch and British utilized the location as a rest stop for officials traveling between Colombo and Galle.
During the British era, Bentota evolved into a coastal retreat, and in the post-independence period it gradually developed into one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach resort destinations. The town’s modern tourism identity was further shaped by renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, whose architectural and landscape designs left a lasting influence on Bentota’s resort culture.
