Anuradhapura Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most historically and culturally significant cities and served as the first ancient capital of the island. Founded in the 5th century BC, it remained the political and religious capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,300 years. The city is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the cradle of Sinhalese civilization and Theravada Buddhism. Anuradhapura gained immense religious importance after the introduction of Buddhism in the 3rd century BC, including the arrival of a sacred sapling of the Bodhi Tree, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Over centuries, the city flourished with advanced irrigation systems, monumental stupas, monasteries, and palaces before being abandoned in the 11th century following invasions from South India. Today, Anuradhapura stands as a sacred pilgrimage and archaeological city, showcasing Sri Lanka’s ancient engineering, culture, and spirituality.
