Horton Plains Sri Lanka

Horton Plains is a protected highland plateau located in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, near Nuwara Eliya, at an elevation of over 2,000 meters above sea level. The area was first documented in the early 19th century during the British colonial period. It was later named after Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, who served as the British Governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837.
During colonial times, the plains were used for hunting and grazing, which led to the disappearance of large wildlife such as elephants from the area. Recognizing its ecological importance, Horton Plains was declared a nature reserve in 1969 and subsequently upgraded to a National Park in 1988. Today, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, protected for its unique montane grasslands, cloud forests, and rich biodiversity.
