Knuckles Range Sri Lanka

The Knuckles Mountain Range, located in central Sri Lanka between Kandy and Matale, is one of the country’s most important natural and historical landscapes. Locally known as “Dumbara Kanduvetiya”, meaning mist-laden mountains, the range has been part of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage for centuries. Its English name “Knuckles” comes from the appearance of its peaks, which resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from certain angles.
Historically, the Knuckles region served as a natural fortress for ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms. Its rugged terrain and dense forests provided protection from invasions, while its remoteness allowed traditional mountain communities to live in isolation. Ancient kings preserved the area as a royal forest, and archaeological evidence suggests early human settlement and use of forest resources.
Recognizing its exceptional ecological value, the Knuckles Conservation Forest was declared a protected area and later included as part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Central Highlands of Sri Lanka in 2010, highlighting its global importance as a biodiversity hotspot.
