Trincomalee Sri Lanka

Trincomalee is a historic port city located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, in the Eastern Province. It is built around Trincomalee Bay, one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, which has given the city immense strategic and commercial importance for over 2,000 years.
In ancient times, Trincomalee was known as Gokanna and later as Thirukonamalai, becoming a major centre of trade, religion, and maritime activity. The city is closely associated with the sacred Koneswaram Temple, one of the most important Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka, believed to date back many centuries.
During the colonial era, Trincomalee was occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British, each recognizing the value of its harbour. The Portuguese destroyed parts of the ancient temple complex and built Fort Frederick, which was later strengthened by the Dutch and British. Trincomalee continued to play a key naval role during World War II and remains strategically important today.
