Kandy Sri Lanka

Kandy is a historic city located in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka and is widely known as the country’s cultural capital. It was the last royal capital of ancient Sri Lankan kings and served as the seat of the Kandyan Kingdom from the late 16th century until 1815. Due to its mountainous location, Kandy successfully resisted Portuguese and Dutch colonial powers for centuries before eventually falling to the British in the early 19th century.
One of the most significant historical events in Kandy’s history was the signing of the Kandyan Convention in 1815, which marked the end of the monarchy and brought Sri Lanka under British rule. Despite this, Kandy retained its strong religious and cultural identity and continues to play a central role in Sri Lankan heritage today. The city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historical importance and sacred traditions.
