Matara Sri Lanka

Matara is a historic coastal city located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, about 160 km south of Colombo. In ancient times, Matara was part of the Kingdom of Ruhuna, an important early Sinhalese kingdom. Historical records suggest that the city was once known as “Mapatuna” and served as a regional administrative and religious center, with Buddhist temples established by ancient kings.
During the colonial era, Matara became strategically important due to its coastal position. The Portuguese first built fortifications in the 16th century, which were later strengthened by the Dutch after they took control of the southern maritime provinces in the 18th century. Matara Fort played a key role in defending Dutch interests in the south and witnessed conflicts involving the Kandyan Kingdom. Today, Matara’s colonial buildings and ramparts reflect its layered history of indigenous rule and European influence.
